A greeter is a person who volunteers to share his/her knoledge of his city or region to visitors.
They aren’t professionnal guides but more like a newly met friend that show you around a place that is important in their life.
Some of them speak English so it may ease communication if you only have notions of French. Website is in French language only; most of them will propose a visit in French.
It is a original and unique way to discover a city like Reims or explore Champagne area far from touristic places and crowd.
Conctact them using Greeters en Champagne
Stay also in a nice B&B rather than in an hotel is also a great way discover Reims and meet its inhabitants.
Here is a list of Champagne tours proposed by private companies. They will pick you mainly in Reims and Epernay and tour you in the countryside, along Champagne route, make stops in the vineyards or spectacular sites.
They all speak English and have knowledge about Champagne, wine making and local history.
The heart of these tours are usually visit(s) of local Champagne makers, far from fastuous Champagne brands. Back to the roots, wine making and simple but nice meetings.
We have been in contact with 3 of them (the ones below with comments) and all guests that attended a tour were highly pleased with it.
La vigne du roy private tours, higly appreciated
Cris events our favourite of the moment, deep knowledge of area and wine making, nice value,
Raw France looks expensive but our guests enjoyed it so much
Even if you have a rental car in Reims, these tours will be appreciated as you ll enjoy a memorable day. ( you may also have a memorable night in ‘Les Telliers’ B&B )
My advice would be not to have a car in Reims as the city is compact and has nice bus and tram system. ( TGV trains are so fast… 45 min from Paris and 30 min from CdG Airport)
Like in most major cities, having a car is sometimes worrying, so explore city by feet and bus and save money for a paying guided tour.
Reims tourist office also proposes a bus tour in vineyards lasting 3 hours ( 35€ 1pers, 60€ for a couple ; rates for 2013)
We highly recommend service of Mr Thompson, we had chance to meet him, he is was very patient and helpful with his clients. He is truly mastering his subject about ww1 and ww2.
He is proposing among other tours a visit of Reims. Historical tour with Dr Thompson
He his proposing taylor made tours in Europe, he may take care of you for one or more days and share his knowledge and pasion for history. Dr Thompson biopic
Please don’t bring traveler’s cheque if you travel in France and especially in Reims.
Very few banks (even listed ones) will accept them.
We recently had a guest who had his cheques refused by 6 major banks in Reims (not remote branches but the main ones in the city)
In Paris some specialized currency change shop will accept them but will claim a fee.
At ‘Les Telliers’ B&B , we accept payments in cash, French cheques in Euro, ANCV holiday cheques.
We have no credit card terminal at home.
Reims christmas market will start again on 2012, November 23th, please check these websites to discover all events related to Reims Christmas market:

Friends of us have a B&B in Wignicourt, a hidden place in the Ardennes, they really deserve to be met.
In few words: nice persons, lovely rooms, and fine cooking !
They may welcome up to 6 persons
like for all B&B the breakfast is included and highly recommended.
They also propose evening meal as an option.
Double room for 50 Euro per night, 40 Euro for stays longer than 3 nights.
A great countryside experience.
Wignicourt is situated near Rethel and is about 65 km far from Reims.
